Groenewoud and Buij designed four kinds of wallpaper, one for each phase in her life. The skirting board is a strip of text with the title of the wallpaper and the names of the artists, photographer and model. The wallpaper patterns consists of tattoos drawn on the skin of a woman, thus emphasising the sensuality of Mata Hari. Viewed closely, the details of the background (the skin) are easily visible:

  • Wallpaper for Margaretha Zelle: The lion comes from the coat of arms of Leeuwarden, the city of her youth.

  • Wallpaper for Mata Hari: The centre of the Indian lotus flower is a navel.

  • Wallpaper for Lady MacLeod: The fleur-de-lis is placed directly over the split in the buttocks.

  • Wallpaper for H21: The texts from the court file are projected on the heart region, the place where the shot landed that ended her life.
